Ethiopia ranks among Africa’s top 10 most impactful country brands in 2025

Ethiopia has been recognized in the top 10 of Africa’s most impactful country brands for 2025, according to Shaping Global Perceptions: Africa’s Most Impactful Country Brands in 2025, a new report by Rebrand Africa.

The qualitative ranking, released in March 2026, places Ethiopia seventh overall, alongside powerhouses like Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Benin, Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt and Morocco. It celebrates Ethiopia’s blend of infrastructure milestones, aviation prowess and rising tourism as key drivers of its global soft power.

Rebrand Africa’s editorial assessment highlights the September 2025 inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a defining moment. The $5 billion hydroelectric project, Africa’s largest, was framed as a symbol of national sovereignty and regional energy leadership, drawing international attention despite tensions with downstream neighbors Egypt and Sudan. Public access to the site was opened shortly after, positioning it as a new tourism landmark.

Ethiopian Airlines further amplified the country’s profile, earning Best Airline in Africa for the eighth straight year at the 2025 Skytrax Awards, alongside regional honors for cabins and catering. The carrier’s Vision 2035 plan — aiming to double its fleet and join the world’s top 20 airlines — and a new premium lounge at Bole International Airport reinforced Addis Ababa’s status as a continental aviation hub. Plans for a mega-airport at Bishoftu signal even bolder ambitions.

Tourism surged 15% in international arrivals, outpacing global averages, fueled by digital visa tools, heritage investments and Addis Ababa’s role hosting major climate summits. The UN Climate Week and Africa Climate Summit positioned Ethiopia as a leader in green infrastructure discussions, spotlighting GERD and the Green Legacy tree-planting initiative.

The report praises Ethiopia’s “Land of Origins” narrative, blending ancient heritage with modern transformation to attract investors and visitors. Ranked via nine pillars — from cultural reach to economic attractiveness — Ethiopia excelled in diplomatic mobility, governance signals and business appeal.

“This ranking validates Ethiopia’s strategic soft power gains through tangible projects and global credibility,” noted Rebrand Africa, urging sustained storytelling to counter persistent challenges.
