The 12th Chinese Peacekeeping Infantry Battalion stationed in South Sudan has successfully concluded a rigorous three-day, two-night joint long-distance patrol and security inspection mission across Rokon, Terekeka, and surrounding regions. Operating under the authorization of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and directives from Sector South, the battalion executed the extensive deployment alongside UN military observers, UN police, and child protection advisers, combining strategic security enforcement with humanitarian outreach.
The mission tested the operational readiness and endurance of the peacekeeping contingent against severe environmental challenges. South Sudan is currently enduring its peak rainy season, marked by sweltering atmospheric conditions and rugged, highly deteriorated terrain. Daytime temperatures during the operation routinely soared above 40 degrees Celsius, compounding the logistical and physical strain on the deployed personnel.
Despite these adverse conditions, the fully armed peacekeepers maintained a high state of operational alert throughout the grueling journey, which spanned a round-trip distance of nearly 400 kilometers while navigating multiple checkpoints operated by the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces.
A critical phase of the deployment involved establishing a temporary operating base in Terekeka. Upon arrival, the peacekeeping force rapidly deployed perimeter security equipment and established an integrated defense system to secure the site.
Simultaneously, accompanying medical personnel executed comprehensive sanitization and disinfection protocols across the operating base to safeguard personnel health in the field environment.
From this forward staging area, the contingent executed targeted security patrols across adjacent sectors while dispatching specialized teams to Rokon, Muni, and surrounding localities to conduct vital escort missions.
These tactical maneuvers were designed to bolster visible security presence, deter potential threats, and ensure freedom of movement along vulnerable transit corridors utilized by humanitarian agencies and local populations.
Beyond their core security mandates, the Chinese peacekeepers leveraged the mission to foster community engagement and deliver essential relief. The contingent established direct diplomatic and operational coordination with local government administrators and police authorities in Terekeka.
Furthermore, peacekeepers deployed out to local villages, distributing clean drinking water, medical supplies, and providing free healthcare services to residents grappling with seasonal hardships.
The comprehensive joint patrol concluded with all assigned tactical and humanitarian objectives successfully fulfilled. The operation drew formal commendation from UNMISS leadership and local community representatives, underscoring the battalion’s contribution to regional stability, civilian protection, and international peacekeeping cooperation in East Africa.
