The Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, Wamkele Mene, arrived in the Somali capital on Sunday for a high-profile official visit. Invited by the Federal Government of Somalia, Mene’s arrival marks a pivotal milestone in the nation’s ongoing efforts to integrate into the continent’s booming single market.
Upon landing at Aden Adde International Airport, Mene and his accompanying delegation were warmly received by Somalia’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Gamal Mohamed Hassan, alongside other senior government officials. The visit underscores a rapidly shifting economic landscape for Somalia as it actively seeks to position itself as a key trading hub in the Horn of Africa.
The high-level visit comes at a crucial juncture for Somalia as it aggressively moves to strengthen its participation in the continental trading system. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the engagement reflects Mogadishu’s unwavering commitment to fostering trade and economic cooperation at the pan-African level, while accelerating the domestic implementation of the AfCFTA Agreement.
Somali trade officials are working diligently to maximize the myriad opportunities presented by the landmark trade pact. The primary focus centers on broadening export markets for locally produced goods, attracting foreign and domestic investment, and unlocking vital growth opportunities for Somali businesses. Special emphasis is being placed on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which form the backbone of the domestic economy.
Mene’s itinerary in Mogadishu includes a series of high-stakes bilateral meetings. He is scheduled to sit down with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Minister Gamal Mohamed Hassan. Additionally, the AfCFTA chief will engage directly with key figures from the private sector and representatives from the Somalia Chamber of Commerce and Industry to discuss private-sector readiness and investment potentials.
This diplomatic and economic outreach builds upon a major legislative milestone achieved late last month. On July 31, 2026, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially signed the AfCFTA Agreement into law. This decisive executive action followed the Federal Parliament’s formal ratification of the treaty on October 20, 2025, cementing Somalia’s legal framework for continental trade.
The African Continental Free Trade Area represents one of the most ambitious economic initiatives in modern history. By uniting Africa’s fragmented national markets into a single continental trading framework, the agreement covers all 55 African Union member states and encompasses a massive consumer market of over 1.4 billion people.
For Somalia, joining the AfCFTA unlocks unprecedented economic potential. Analysts note that the country is uniquely positioned to leverage its strategic geographic location, extensive coastline, and vital maritime trade routes connecting the Horn of Africa, East Africa, and the lucrative markets of the Gulf region.
By tapping into the single market, Somalia aims to transition from a post-conflict recovery state to a vibrant, competitive regional trade hub. The collaborative efforts between the Federal Government and the AfCFTA Secretariat are expected to iron out logistical frameworks, reduce trade barriers, and streamline customs procedures. As Mene’s visit continues, government leaders and business executives alike are optimistic that the discussions will yield tangible roadmaps, accelerating Somalia’s integration and ushering in a new era of shared prosperity, employment creation, and sustainable economic development.
