The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has announced that Ethiopia actively participated in the 11th BRICS Foreign Policy Dialogue held in New Delhi under India’s BRICS Chairship. During the forum, the Ethiopian delegation reaffirmed the country’s firm stance and commitment to constructive multilateral diplomacy and strengthened South-South cooperation.
According to an official statement shared on the ministry’s social media page, the Ethiopian delegation—led by Mekonnen Gossaye, Director General for Strategic Planning and Monitoring at the MFA—joined senior foreign policy officials, planning heads, and sector experts from member states to hold extensive discussions on shared strategic interests.
This 11th BRICS Foreign Policy Dialogue primarily focused on global resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability. The forum served as an essential platform for member states to exchange perspectives within the rapidly shifting global political and economic landscape.
In his address to the forum, Mekonnen Gossaye elaborated on the high priority Ethiopia places on climate action and its ongoing practical initiatives. Notably, the “Green Legacy Initiative”—spearheaded by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, which has mobilized a nationwide movement—was highlighted as a prime example of the country’s dedication to ecosystem restoration and expanding forest cover. It was noted that Ethiopia’s experience in this regard offers a significant contribution to global climate change mitigation efforts.
The head of the delegation also outlined the large-scale economic and digital transformation reforms currently underway in Ethiopia. He showcased the country’s rapid progress in advanced infrastructure development, the rollout of the national digital ID system (Fayda ID), financial technology (fintech) solutions, and e-governance services.
He emphasized that these modern technological integrations are strategic measures being taken to elevate the country’s overall development trajectory and streamline business operations.
Ethiopia underscored its commitment to deeply enhancing its partnership within the BRICS framework, urging member states to prioritize knowledge-sharing and mutual experience. Furthermore, the delegation emphasized that improving access to “Green Finance”—which is vital for the sustainable development of developing nations—and building collective resilience against global shocks are foundational to achieving shared prosperity.
Since becoming a member of BRICS, Ethiopia has continued to play its part in ensuring that the voices of developing nations under the umbrella of South-South cooperation are heard on the global stage, advocating for a fair and equitable international economic system. The foreign policy dialogue in New Delhi is viewed as a significant opportunity to further advance Ethiopia’s diplomatic and economic interests.
