Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a telephone conversation with his Somali counterpart, Abdisalam Abdi Ali, to address escalating geopolitical dynamics and security challenges across the Horn of Africa. During the talks, Cairo delivered a forceful message regarding regional stability, centering on the absolute preservation of Somalia’s governance, borders, and national autonomy.
Minister Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s uncompromising stance against any unilateral measures, actions, or external interferences that risk compromising Somalia’s territorial integrity. As regional tensions persist, Cairo has consistently positioned itself as a staunch defender of Mogadishu’s central government, warning that unauthorized agreements or external maneuvers threatening Somali borders pose a direct threat to wider regional peace and security.
A primary focus of the ministerial discussion was the architecture of security missions currently operating within Somali territory. Abdelatty underscored the critical necessity of securing predictable, long-term, and sustainable funding for the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Highlighting Egypt’s active military and strategic participation in the coalition, he noted that maintaining robust financial frameworks is vital for ground operations and counter-insurgency efforts.
Furthermore, the Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed the indispensable role played by the United Nations support apparatus in Somalia. He noted that both entities must be fully financed and institutionally supported to ensure uninterrupted operations aimed at neutralizing extremist elements and preserving state integrity.
Reaffirming Cairo’s comprehensive backing for Somali national institutions, Abdelatty outlined ongoing bilateral cooperation aimed at strengthening state infrastructure. This includes targeted assistance focused on enhancing the administrative and operational capabilities of Somali state bodies, deepening joint frameworks to combat terrorism and violent extremism, and fostering sustainable political and economic partnerships between Cairo and Mogadishu.
In response to Egypt’s diplomatic assurances, Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali expressed deep gratitude on behalf of the Federal Government of Somalia. Ali commended Egypt for its continuous, multi-layered support—spanning political, developmental, and security sectors—and praised Cairo’s unyielding defense of Somali sovereignty on international and regional platforms.
The conversation concluded with a mutual commitment to maintaining close, continuous coordination and high-level consultations. Both nations agreed that deepening their bilateral strategic partnership serves the core interests of their people and contributes heavily to mitigating instability across the broader East African and Red Sea corridors.
