Kenya lone African pick in WEF’s 2026 Technology Pioneers

By HER staff reporter

The World Economic Forum has named Kenya’s Pezesha among its 2026 Technology Pioneers, making Kenya the only African country represented in this year’s cohort of 100 early-stage companies from 23 countries. The annual list spotlights start-ups developing breakthrough technologies with the potential to transform industries and societies.

Pezesha was selected for its work connecting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises to credit and supply chain finance through embedded finance infrastructure. Its inclusion places Kenya at the centre of Africa’s representation in a cohort that the Forum says is increasingly shaped by technologies powering the next era of artificial intelligence.

The 2026 group is notable for its emphasis on AI infrastructure, including systems that support autonomous AI agents, as well as technologies addressing energy, computing and storage demands. The Forum said the cohort also reflects the widening geography of frontier innovation, with strong showings from India and the Republic of Korea, while Kenya stands out as the only African country on the list.

Verena Kuhn, Head of Innovator Communities at the World Economic Forum, said the community has long served as an early indicator of where technology is heading, noting that early-stage firms are now tackling problems that once required large budgets and teams. She added that AI is not only the technology many of these companies are building around, but also a tool making their work possible.

The Technology Pioneers will take part in a two-year engagement programme and contribute expertise to Forum initiatives. They are also invited to the Annual Meeting of the New Champions 2026, scheduled for 23-25 June in Dalian, China.

Pezesha’s selection adds to Kenya’s growing profile in fintech and innovation, with the company offering embedded finance infrastructure for small businesses that often struggle to access formal credit. The announcement places the Kenyan start-up alongside peers building technologies in AI, quantum computing, biotechnology, climate innovation, space and advanced manufacturing.

The full 2026 Technology Pioneers cohort includes start-ups from countries across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and North America, underscoring the global scope of this year’s selection. Kenya’s presence, however, is singular: Pezesha is the country’s only representative and the only African entrant in the 2026 class.
