Mogadishu marks 66 years of freedom: President Mohamud leads national independence day celebrations

By HER staff reporter

The heart of Somalia’s capital beat with renewed fervor this week as the nation commemorated its 66th Independence and Unification Day. The landmark anniversary, marking the birth of the Somali Republic in 1960, brought together high-ranking government officials, military leaders, and thousands of jubilant citizens to honor the historic struggle for sovereignty.

The festivities officially commenced on Tuesday night with a poignant flag-raising ceremony in Mogadishu. At the stroke of midnight—the precise hour the Somali flag was first hoisted 66 years ago—units of the Somali National Army performed the ritual, signaling the start of a day dedicated to reflection and national pride. The date commemorates the historic unification of the former Italian Somaliland and British Somaliland, a moment that remains the bedrock of Somalia’s national identity.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud led the national proceedings, delivering a stirring address that bridged the gap between the sacrifices of the past and the aspirations of the future. “July 1 is a historic day that reflects the long, arduous struggle of Somali patriots for freedom, unity, and statehood,” President Mohamud stated. He emphasized that the anniversary serves as a crucial reminder for the current generation to uphold the vision of the nation’s founders, urging citizens to prioritize national unity, solidarity, and the ongoing work of state-building.

The atmosphere in Mogadishu was electric, with citizens filling the streets, waving flags, and participating in public celebrations that highlighted a deep sense of patriotism. In a rare and spontaneous show of connection, President Mohamud joined the crowds in the capital, celebrating alongside residents in the streets.

The following morning, the solemnity of the occasion was honored at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. The President laid a wreath in tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence.

This was followed by an impressive military display by the Somali Armed Forces, featuring armored vehicles and fighter jets. Government officials noted that the scale of the parade reflected significant strides in the federal government’s efforts to rebuild and modernize the national security forces.

As the day concluded, President Mohamud issued a final call to action for all Somalis. He urged the nation to remain vigilant in defending its hard-won independence, while focusing on a future defined by self-sufficiency, security, and full sovereignty. The celebrations served as a powerful testament to Somalia’s resilience and its enduring commitment to progress in the modern era.
