Addis Ababa becomes base for new movement vowing to overthrow Eritrean regime

By HER staff reporter

It has been revealed that the Ethiopian government has provided office space and security protection in Addis Ababa to forces opposing the Eritrean government. The new opposition group, named the “Eritrean Youth Movement for Unity and Justice – Green Revolution Project,” held its founding conference in Addis Ababa with the aim of overthrowing the dictatorial regime in Asmara and initiating a new political chapter.

The chairman of the movement, Mohammad Ahmad, stated that the primary objective of this new movement is to eliminate the injustice that has prevailed over the Eritrean people for years, establish justice, and build a balanced social life. What sets this movement apart from previous opposition groups is its forefront initiative to defend the rights and voice of the Eritrean Muslim community, which it claims has faced severe marginalization and discrimination in political, economic, and decision-making positions in Eritrea for many decades.

In a statement to journalists, Chairman Mohammad Ahmad indicated that the strategy designed to remove the Asmara government is multifaceted. He officially confirmed that this is not limited to political diplomacy alone but also includes a military struggle option. Although he did not wish to disclose the exact location and strategic information regarding where the armed struggle will begin at this time for security reasons, he stated that they are conducting extensive discussions and communications to reach a common understanding with several partner organizations.

Mohammad confirmed that the Ethiopian government has granted the organization office space and a base of operations in Addis Ababa to coordinate this military and political struggle. “The Ethiopian government has allowed us to have a ground and office here,” the chairman said, expressing hope that this trust and support will grow further over time. However, he pointed out that the movement is currently operating by relying entirely on its own internal resources and member contributions.

In Eritrea’s political history, although numerous opposition organizations have been established over the past years to overthrow the Eritrean government, it is known that they have failed to bring about significant change. The leaders of the Green Revolution Project say they have thoroughly evaluated this failure.

According to Mohammad Ahmad, the reason past Eritrean opposition groups failed to bring change was due to a lack of mutual trust among Eritreans, rooted in religious, cultural, and linguistic differences.

“We learned a lot from the mistakes of the past Eritrean opposition. At this stage, we believe we must first organize ourselves well, discuss our problems openly, and then seek common ground with other Eritrean opposition forces. Without organizing yourself, nobody is going to give you your rights,” the chairman explained, outlining his organization’s new approach.

The official statement released by the movement shows that this project is not a temporary voice of protest or a short-lived political phenomenon. Rather, it is a long-term national project designed to restore Eritrea’s sustainable national balance. The organization believes that mobilizing the Eritrean Muslim community is not an effort to divide the country, but on the contrary, a foundation that enables true national partnership, mutual respect, and equality among all Eritreans.

The movement firmly believes that the new generation and the Muslim youth community have the potential to change the future of Eritrea if provided with a clear vision, effective organization, and responsible leadership. The founding conference held today in Addis Ababa marks the beginning of this new phase of change, and the movement announced that it will accelerate practical work to change the regime on Eritrean soil immediately following the conclusion of the conference.
