with Youth-Led Community Activities
The International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) held an integrated peace and safety program in the Mwenge area of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in April 2026 under the theme “Educate Peace, Ensure Safety: The DPCW Article 10.” The initiative combined environmental action with practical safety training, aiming to promote a culture of peace while strengthening community resilience.
The Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) is an international framework outlining principles for ending war and promoting sustainable peace, with Article 10 emphasizing the spread of a culture of peace.
As part of the program, a large-scale plogging activity was carried out at Mwenge Junction and the New Mwenge Bus Stand. More than 300 youth volunteers and local residents participated in collecting and sorting litter, contributing to the improvement of the local environment.
Alongside the cleanup effort, a public awareness campaign reflecting DPCW Article 10 was conducted under the theme “Educate Peace, Ensure Safety.” The campaign integrated peace education with practical safety training, encouraging youth to take an active role in safeguarding their communities.
In collaboration with Dingonet, an NGO specializing in disaster management, the program included hands-on demonstrations on fire extinguisher usage and emergency response procedures. Participants engaged in practical exercises designed to enhance their ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.
The program was implemented in cooperation with multiple local organizations, including Juhudi Mwenge Group, G4TC, British School, Kilimanjaro Institute, Kinondoni Municipal Council, and WEO, as well as No Limit Foundation, UDSM, Dingonet, TAYO, and Sisi Tanzania. Coca-Cola also participated as one of several supporting organizations by providing beverages for participants.
A participant noted, “Taking part in both environmental cleanup and safety training helped me understand how peace can be practiced through concrete actions in the community.”
An IPYG official stated that the organization will continue expanding similar initiatives in collaboration with local partners to support youth engagement in peacebuilding.
