Ethiopia secures U.S. backing for Bishoftu International Airport project

By HER staff reporter

The Ethiopian government has secured strong support from U.S. government agencies, renowned financial institutions, and global industry players for the construction of the Bishoftu International Airport following a high-impact financial roadshow in the United States.

This successful mission marks a decisive milestone in turning this project—slated to be one of the largest and most modern aviation hubs on the continent—into a reality.

Beyond infrastructure development, the project is a core part of Ethiopia’s ongoing economic reforms aimed at increasing its share in the global trade and logistics network.

During the week-long series of discussions in Washington, senior U.S. officials expressed their firm confidence in Ethiopia’s current economic reform agenda. The transition of the economic system to be more open to the private sector was cited as a primary incentive for American investors.

U.S. representatives praised Ethiopia’s macroeconomic performance and future growth prospects, noting that the Bishoftu project is a high-impact investment based on the strategic interests of both countries. By opening doors for U.S. companies to participate in the business, Ethiopia has demonstrated its commitment to a sustainable and transparent infrastructure development model.

The Bishoftu International Airport has the potential to redefine Africa’s connection with the rest of the world. Serving as the primary hub for the Ethiopian Airlines Group—the largest and most successful carrier on the continent—it will resolve the space constraints of the current Bole International Airport.

Ahmed Shide, Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, stated: “The Bishoftu International Airport is a national priority project with global impact. This project is designed to unlock opportunities for trade, investment, and connectivity across Africa and beyond. The strong engagement we witnessed in Washington reflects global confidence in Ethiopia’s economic future.”

This project aims to create an “Aviation City” by integrating modern passenger terminals with advanced logistics zones. Establishing this “Mega-hub” will help Ethiopia increase its share in the transcontinental cargo and passenger transit market, helping the country achieve its goal of becoming the “Singapore of Africa.”

The financial roadshow highlighted the deep commercial ties between the two nations. For U.S. companies, the Bishoftu project offers billion-dollar opportunities in engineering, technology, security systems, and sustainable energy options.

Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, explained the long-standing cooperation that serves as the foundation for this new venture: “Our collaboration with U.S. partners, from aircraft procurement to technical systems, has been crucial to our airline’s success.

This project builds on that trusted foundation, enabling us to meet growing global demand and positioning Addis Ababa as a leading aviation hub.”

Hassatou N’Sele, Vice President of Finance at the African Development Bank, highlighted the project’s appeal to international lenders, stating: “This project is built on a solid foundation and holds the potential for high profitability. The Bishoftu Airport will accelerate regional integration, enhance competitiveness, and drive sustainable growth across Africa.”

The discussions held in Washington have moved beyond general interest toward practical implementation strategies. Negotiators focused on several key areas, including a financial structure that integrates government guarantees with private sector capital and loans, as well as technical implementation leveraging American expertise in modern airport technology.

Additionally, a strong emphasis was placed on sustainability, ensuring the project meets international Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards to attract “green” financing. The momentum gained in Washington has established a clear runway for the airport’s construction.

With support from both the U.S. government and the African Development Bank, the project has transitioned from a distant vision into a tangible reality.
