Kenya triumphs in global bid to host GCF regional office following intense 47-country competition

By staff reporter

Kenya’s official selection to host the Eastern and Southern Africa regional office of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) has been recorded as a major diplomatic and economic victory. This decision, passed during the fund’s 44th Board meeting in Songdo, South Korea, establishes Nairobi as the primary hub for climate finance activities across the entire continent.

Kenya secured this opportunity by emerging victorious from a rigorous competitive process involving 47 developing nations, including 17 from Africa, all of whom met strict evaluation criteria. This move is part of the GCF’s strategic decentralization aimed at bringing decision-making closer to regions where the impacts of climate change are most severely felt.

The new office to be established in Nairobi will serve as a center for coordinating climate-resilient projects. This will open doors to more easily access billions of dollars intended for mitigation and adaptation efforts. According to Decision B.41/10, the Fund’s Board stated that the establishment of these regional offices is intended to “maintain geographical balance and increase operational efficiency.”

Dr. Pacifica Ogola, Director of Climate Change and a representative of the Africa Group of Negotiators on the Board, stated, “This victory demonstrates Kenya’s influence on the international climate stage. Nairobi is no longer just a regional city; it has become an engine for coordinating climate finance.”

In addition to Kenya, three other countries were selected to host regional offices: Côte d’Ivoire for West, Central, and North Africa; Panama City for Latin America and the Caribbean; and Jordan for Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Middle East.

The opening of the GCF office will create significant job opportunities in Nairobi and attract international climate consultants, non-governmental organizations, and financial institutions to the city. Experts suggest that this event will not only strengthen Kenya’s “Green Economy” but also provide technical assistance to ensure local projects meet the fund’s strict requirements to secure financial support.
