A high-level delegation from the Upper House of Somalia’s Federal Parliament actively participated in the 8th Conference of the Arab Parliament and Speakers of Arab Councils and Parliaments. Held at the prestigious headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo, the assembly served as a critical platform for Arab nations to address pressing geopolitical challenges. During the summit, the assembly issued a powerful and unanimous condemnation against Israeli interference in Somalia’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, marking a significant moment of regional solidarity for the Horn of Africa nation.
The conference brought together top parliamentary leaders from across the Arab world to deliberate on collective security and diplomatic strategies. The participants adopted a series of comprehensive resolutions firmly affirming the absolute importance of respecting national sovereignty, territorial integrity, international law, and the foundational principles of the United Nations Charter.
A specific, dedicated resolution concerning Somalia strongly condemned Israel’s recent diplomatic maneuvers, focusing heavily on what the participants described as unauthorized interference and blatant violations in Arab countries, with particular emphasis on the current situations in Somalia, Lebanon, and Syria.
In an official statement released after the session, the Arab Parliament explicitly declared that these external actions constitute a direct violation of international law and undermine the global principle of respecting the sovereignty of independent states. The assembly urgently called for an immediate end to any unilateral steps that could destabilize the region and expressed its full, unwavering solidarity with Somalia and other affected Arab nations. This unified stance comes amid heightened concerns regarding regional stability, as the African Union and the Arab League have both previously condemned Israel’s controversial recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland, a move that Mogadishu views as a direct threat to its borders.
The geopolitical friction has intensified following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and the subsequent appointment of an ambassador to the breakaway territory. Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has repeatedly cautioned the international community that such engagements risk importing complex Middle Eastern tensions directly into the Horn of Africa. Furthermore, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmad Aboul Gheit has formally described the appointment of an ambassador to Somaliland as illegal and a dangerous escalation.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, Somalia’s defense minister previously revealed that authorities possess confirmed information regarding an Israeli initiative to forcibly relocate Palestinians from Gaza to Somali soil—a provocative plan that Mogadishu has firmly and completely rejected. Ultimately, while these Arab Parliament resolutions are largely symbolic, they significantly amplify the diplomatic pressure on Israel while reinforcing the absolute stance that Somaliland remains an integral, inseparable part of Somalia’s sovereign territory.
