Museveni elected EAC Chairman amid regional tensions

By staff reporter

Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been elected as the new Chairman of the East African Community (EAC), succeeding Kenyan President William Ruto at the 25th Ordinary Summit held here yesterday.

The appointment positions Museveni to lead the eight-member bloc — comprising Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Somalia — during a period marked by diplomatic strains, trade disruptions and escalating security challenges. His selection reflects recognition of his long-standing role in the EAC’s formation and revival, as well as his commitment to Pan-African integration.

President Museveni assumes leadership of the Community, first established in 1967, collapsed in 1977, and revived on July 7, 2000. Analysts expect the veteran leader to leverage his extensive regional experience to advance economic cooperation and political unity.

Yet his tenure faces immediate tests. Persistent diplomatic disagreements among partner states have slowed progress on the EAC common market, while cross-border trade remains hampered by non-tariff barriers and logistical bottlenecks. Most critically, insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo continues to destabilise the region, threatening supply chains and investment flows.

Political observers note that resolving these interconnected challenges will demand deft diplomacy. “Museveni’s chairmanship offers a chance to reset strained relations and refocus on integration goals, but success hinges on bridging divides among member leaders,” one regional analyst remarked.

Many hope the election signals a fresh chapter for enhanced cooperation. In the months ahead, Museveni is expected to mediate grievances, strengthen security collaboration and push for deeper economic ties to bolster the bloc’s common market.
