Somalia and Mauritania have officially signed a comprehensive agreement to establish a Joint Cooperation Committee. The landmark pact represents a significant turning point in strengthening bilateral relations between the two African nations, opening new avenues for strategic alignment in politics, trade, investment, education, and diplomacy. The agreement was finalized following high-level discussions held at Mauritania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the capital city of Nouakchott, where senior leaders from both delegations gathered to witness the formal structuring of an elevated interstate partnership.
The historic documents were signed by Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ali Mohamed Omar, widely known as Ali Balcad, alongside Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Mauritanians Abroad, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug. In addition to the primary agreement establishing the joint committee, the two foreign ministers signed two supplementary memoranda of understanding.
These foundational frameworks are specifically designed to institutionalize regular political consultations between the two governments and to launch collaborative initiatives in the vital sector of diplomatic training, thereby strengthening the professional capacities of their respective foreign service corps.
According to joint statements released by both delegations, the newly created Joint Cooperation Committee will function as a permanent, structured institutional mechanism. Its primary mandate is to actively coordinate, monitor, and execute joint programs and socioeconomic projects across a wide spectrum of mutual interests, ensuring that the high-level diplomatic pledges materialize into tangible outcomes. Following the signing ceremony, Ali Balcad warmly welcomed the successful outcome of the Nouakchott talks, strongly reaffirming Somalia’s commitment to translating the newly signed treaties into practical, everyday cooperation.
