CBIC Seminar highlights shift in broadcast technology for the Global South

At a seminar on radio and television program production technologies for the Global South, organized by China Broadcasting International Economic and Technical Cooperation Co., Ltd. (CBIC), participants were introduced to a major shift in broadcast production: the move away from dedicated hardware toward software-based processing and commodity compute infrastructure.


The presentation argued that the real transformation in modern broadcast operations is not simply the adoption of SMPTE ST 2110, but the broader replacement of purpose-built broadcast equipment with virtualized servers and general-purpose computing systems. According to the seminar materials, this approach allows audio, video and data signals to be routed and distributed through software applications rather than fixed hardware platforms.

The discussion also highlighted FIFA’s Dynamic Media Facility (DMF) for the 2026 World Cup and the Olympic Games’ Virtualized Outside Broadcast (vOB) model as parallel examples of the same global trend. Both systems were presented as evidence that the industry is moving toward software-defined, scalable and more efficient broadcast production architectures.

The seminar said this transition can reduce physical infrastructure needs, lower redundancy costs and shift spending from heavy capital expenditure to more flexible operating costs. It also noted that the trend is being driven by the growing performance of x86, FPGA and GPU systems, as well as the maturity of virtualization and containerization technologies.

For broadcasters in the Global South, the message was clear: the future of production lies in adaptable software platforms, not hardware lock-in.
