AU Election Observation Mission deploys to Ethiopia ahead of June 1 election

By HER staff reporter

The African Union Election Observation Mission has officially arrived in Addis Ababa to observe the upcoming general elections scheduled for June 1, 2026, according to a statement from the Union’s headquarters. Deployed at the formal invitation of the Government of Ethiopia, this high-level delegation of diplomats and experts will closely monitor the overall electoral process across the country.

The mission is led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, whose leadership is highlighted by political analysts as a reflection of the critical importance of this mission for regional stability and democratic development in East Africa.

According to the official data released by the African Union, the observer team consists of 73 Short-Term Observers drawn from 37 African countries. A distinguishing feature of this year’s mission is the exceptionally high representation of women, who make up 61 percent of the total delegation. This demographic composition underscores the African Union’s continental commitment to ensuring equal participation and decision-making roles for women in democratic processes.

The delegation includes highly experienced professionals from various fields, including ambassadors accredited to the African Union, election management officials, civil society representatives, human rights defenders, media and gender specialists, as well as youth representatives.

The members of the observer team will be deployed across different regions and administrations of Ethiopia on election day to strictly and impartially monitor key activities, including the opening of polling stations, voting procedures, the counting of ballots, and the tabulation of results. The African Union Election Observation Mission emphasized that its assessment will not be arbitrary but will instead be strictly guided by established continental and international benchmarks.

The primary legal and political frameworks governing their operation include Ethiopia’s legal framework governing elections, the OAU/AU Declaration on the Principles Governing Democratic Elections in Africa, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, and other regional and international standards for democratic elections.

During its tenure in Ethiopia, the observation mission will hold a series of consultative meetings with state institutions and various political and social stakeholders. These engagements will include consultations with the National Election Board of Ethiopia, competing political parties, candidates, civil society organizations, local and international media representatives, members of the diplomatic community, and other international election observation missions operating in the country.

The African Union mission is scheduled to share its preliminary findings and assessment of the electoral process with the public during a press conference in Addis Ababa on June 3, 2026, just two days after the election concludes. Furthermore, a final, comprehensive report detailing the mission’s deep analysis, core findings, and strategic recommendations for future electoral improvements will be officially published and distributed within two months following the conclusion of the elections.
