Sudan’s “Falcons of Jediane” face a tough test against defending champions Senegal in the Round of 16

By HER staff reporter

The stage is set at the Tangier Grand Stadium for a monumental clash that resembles the story of David and Goliath. The Sudanese national football team, affectionately known by their nickname the “Falcons of Jediane,” have finalized their preparations to face the formidable “Lions of Teranga” of Senegal in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

After successfully navigating a “Group of Death” that included Algeria, Burkina Faso, and Equatorial Guinea, Sudan now stands on the threshold of history. However, to advance to the quarter-finals, they must defeat a Senegal team that is both the 2021 champion and the most anticipated contender in this year’s tournament.

The buildup to Saturday’s critical match has been marked by a daring tactical decision from Sudan’s Ghanaian head coach, James Kwesi Appiah. During the final group match against Burkina Faso last Wednesday, Appiah chose to rest his regular starters and field a secondary lineup. Although this decision resulted in a 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso, the coach remained unfazed.

Speaking after the match, Appiah stated that he was not concerned about the team’s performance level in that game because his focus was entirely on the upcoming Senegal match. He explained that he prioritized giving his key players sufficient rest before the high-stakes game occurring just 72 hours later, emphasizing that they are there to demonstrate the true potential Sudan possesses.

The challenge ahead is significant, as Senegal advanced to the knockout stage in peak form, led by veteran star Sadio Mane and a roster filled with players from Europe’s top leagues. The “Lions” finished at the top of their group with a goal difference of six, clearly signaling their commitment to reclaiming their title.

For Sudan, the challenge is twofold: they must find a way to break through a Senegalese defense composed of world-renowned players while simultaneously neutralizing Senegal’s lightning-fast attacking line. Much of Sudan’s hope rests on the shoulders of Aamir Abdallah, who showed exceptional skill early in the tournament; his ability to finish will be vital in converting the few opportunities the team is likely to get.

Despite the fact that the balance of power favors Senegal, there is a profound sense of hope within the Sudanese camp. Coach Appiah noted that the entire Sudanese population wants the players to enjoy the game, promising that the team will fight to raise the Sudanese flag high and bring joy to their people.

For a Sudan that dreams of returning to its golden era of 1970, Saturday’s match is more than just football—it is a display of national resilience. Whether the “Falcons” can create the biggest surprise of the tournament remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: all eyes in Casablanca will be fixed on Tangier.
