Somalia, Sudan ink diplomatic visa waiver to strengthen bilateral ties

By HER staff reporter

The governments of Somalia and Sudan have officially signed a mutual visa exemption agreement for their citizens holding diplomatic passports, a move aimed at enhancing regional integration and streamlining official cooperation.

This historic agreement was signed during the second regular session of the Somalia-Sudan Political Consultation Committee held in Mogadishu, reflecting a shared commitment to renewing long-standing bilateral relations between the two nations.

The agreement was signed by Hamza Adan Haadow, Permanent Secretary of Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Ambassador Muawiya Osman Khalid, Undersecretary of Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Under the new framework, diplomatic officials from both countries can travel between Mogadishu and Khartoum without visa requirements, facilitating more frequent and efficient high-level consultations.

Beyond travel logistics, the meeting served as a broad platform for discussing the future of the Horn of Africa, with officials emphasizing three key pillars: political alignment, economic integration, and educational exchange.

In a statement, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this agreement is more than a mere administrative formality, serving instead as a testament to the enduring friendship between the two peoples. The ministry added that by removing barriers for diplomats, both nations ensure their coordination on regional security and international policies remains seamless.

The two delegations also consulted on ways to collaborate on capacity-building initiatives, particularly in the civil service and diplomatic training sectors. This partnership offers Somalia an opportunity for institutional knowledge exchange, while helping Sudan reaffirm its influence within the East African diplomatic community despite its current internal challenges.

During the consultations, the Somali delegation reaffirmed its unwavering support for Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing solidarity with the Sudanese people in their efforts to achieve stability and security.

Both parties emphasized the importance of maintaining a coordinated regional voice on the global stage. By aligning their positions at international organizations and the African Union, Somalia and Sudan aim to better confront shared challenges, ranging from maritime security to the impacts of climate change and economic instability.

Analysts suggest that this diplomatic progress is part of a wider trend among Horn of Africa nations to utilize bilateral agreements as a means to bolster economic resilience. For Mogadishu, this agreement is seen as another milestone in its efforts to position the country as a key player in regional politics.
