Thailand has announced plans to establish a resident embassy in Addis Ababa. The landmark decision was revealed during the Ethiopia-Thailand Business Bridge forum, signaling a new chapter in bilateral relations between the two nations as they seek to transition longstanding diplomatic ties into robust, action-oriented commercial partnerships.
The announcement regarding the resident embassy was made by Arthayudh Srisamoot, Advisor to Thailand’s Foreign Minister, during high-level business-to-business (B2B) meetings hosted in the Ethiopian capital. Srisamoot emphasized that stationing a resident ambassador in Addis Ababa—the diplomatic capital of Africa and headquarters of the African Union—will serve as a vital conduit to facilitate closer institutional linkages, streamline diplomatic communications, and actively support expanding networks between the two countries.
This diplomatic expansion complements a series of recent high-level engagements aimed at cementing ties under the broader framework of Thailand’s renewed outreach to the African continent. Both nations have reinforced their intergovernmental coordination by establishing structured political consultation dialogues and fostering direct cooperation agreements between their respective chambers of commerce. Officials from both sides noted that these institutional upgrades are designed to bridge geographical distances and provide consistent oversight for burgeoning cooperative projects.
While diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Thailand have long been characterized by mutual trust and goodwill, leaders from both nations have openly acknowledged that current bilateral trade and investment volumes remain well below their true potential. The Ethiopia-Thailand Business Bridge forum was expressly convened to correct this imbalance, serving as a dynamic platform for matchmaking, networking, and mapping out actionable pathways for corporate entities.
Dewano Kedir, Ethiopia’s Middle East, Asia and Pacific Affairs Director-General, highlighted that the engagement goes far beyond ceremonial speeches. He assured visiting Thai business leaders that the Ethiopian government is fully prepared to facilitate foreign investments, pointing to a wide array of high-potential sectors. These include finance, petroleum and energy-related infrastructure, industrial manufacturing, consumer goods, and comprehensive agricultural value chains. Particular emphasis was placed on inviting partnerships in Ethiopian coffee production, agro-processing, and mining—sectors viewed as prime catalysts for local job creation and technology transfer.
Echoing these sentiments, Thailand’s Ambassador-Designate to Ethiopia, Jirusaya Birananda, pointed to Ethiopia’s ongoing Homegrown Economic Reform agenda and overall development momentum as compelling incentives for international investors. She noted that a delegation of nine credible Thai companies actively participated in the forum, representing sectors as diverse as food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, digital technology, tourism, and advanced manufacturing.
Birananda stressed that future commercial collaboration must transcend traditional buyer-supplier dynamics, encouraging instead deep-rooted partnerships centered on co-creation, technological cooperation, and direct capital investment.
Beyond traditional commerce, the relationship already enjoys strong people-to-people foundations. Thousands of Ethiopians regularly travel to Thailand for medical and wellness tourism, a service sector that both governments hope to integrate more closely with broader developmental exchanges. With the establishment of a permanent diplomatic mission in Addis Ababa, Thailand aims to position itself as a key strategic partner in Ethiopia’s structural transformation, while Ethiopia serves as a central anchor for Bangkok’s broader diplomatic and economic ambitions in East Africa.
