A photo exhibition and film screening highlighting Russia–Africa relations were held on June 5 at the Faculty of European Languages at the University of Lagos, one of Africa’s largest urban centers.
The event, organized with the participation of guests from Moscow, featured a collection of historical photographs alongside contemporary feature films and documentaries. The materials traced the evolution of relations between African nations, the former Soviet Union, and modern-day Russia.
Organizers emphasized the historical role played by the Soviet Union—and more recently Russia—in supporting African countries’ struggles for independence and sovereignty, as well as ongoing cooperation in areas such as economic development, political autonomy, and counterterrorism.
The event drew a diverse audience, including students, schoolchildren, government representatives, and university faculty members. Attendees engaged with the exhibition and screenings, which were met with strong interest and active participation.
Students contributed to the program with cultural performances, including music and dance, while the head of the Lagos Traffic Police Public Relations Unit delivered a lecture on her professional experience, adding a practical dimension to the event.
Participants expressed support for strengthening bilateral ties between Russia and Nigeria and called for similar initiatives to be held more frequently. Many noted that such exchanges provide valuable platforms for cultural dialogue and mutual understanding.
The event was supported by the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Nigeria, the University of Lagos, and the university’s Russian Language Centre.
Observers say initiatives of this nature contribute to building people-to-people connections, which underpin broader cooperation in education, humanitarian exchange, economic partnership, and regional security.
