South Sudan officially launches new trade information hub to streamline cross-border commerce

By HER staff reporter

The South Sudan Ministry of Trade and Industry has officially launched an online Trade Information Hub designed to simplify import and export processes and provide transparent information to investors. This digital platform is regarded as a major achievement in the country’s efforts to modernize its trade sector and enhance its international competitiveness.

The inauguration ceremony, held last Thursday in Juba, was attended by senior government officials, representatives of the business community, and delegates from the European Union. This new platform is intended to reduce bureaucratic hurdles to doing business, allowing traders and investors to access up-to-date information on market conditions and legal procedures in a single location.

During the inauguration, Vice President for the Economic Cluster James Wani Igga stated that as the country transitions to digital operations, cybersecurity must be a primary consideration. “As we embrace digital solutions in the trade sector, we must invest in strong cybersecurity systems to protect sensitive data and ensure the reliability of the platform,” he said.

Similarly, the Speaker of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly, Joseph Ngere Paciko, warned that weaknesses in digital infrastructure could limit the platform’s effectiveness. According to the Speaker, without continuous technical monitoring and maintenance, there is a risk the platform could become inaccessible to users. “Infrastructure is a major challenge in our nation; this platform requires constant updates if it is to remain functional,” he urged.

The European Union, which has been supporting the project financially and technically, stated that the platform is vital for South Sudan’s economic growth. Barbara Egger, Head of Cooperation for the EU Delegation to South Sudan, remarked, “This trade and investment platform is a concrete strategic tool to unlock trade, attract investment, and create jobs.”

Egger added that South Sudan could turn its challenges into opportunities by leveraging its vast natural resources, youthful workforce, and strategic location in East Africa. She emphasized that establishing a robust trade system is the foundation for a prosperous and peaceful South Sudan.

Acting Minister of Trade and Industry, Pieng Ding Kuol, called upon the business community and relevant stakeholders to adopt and support the system. “This initiative marks the beginning of a broader transformation toward creating a more transparent and competitive trade environment,” he said.

This Trade Information Hub is expected to not only bridge the trade information gap in South Sudan but also create significant capacity for the country to increase its share within the East African Community (EAC) and the global market. In particular, its role in streamlining cross-border commerce is expected to have a profound impact on reducing the cost of goods and accelerating trade exchange.

Overall, analysts suggest that this digital transformation journey initiated by the South Sudanese government demonstrates an effort to move past economic challenges and transition toward sustainable growth.
