The Federal Republic of Somalia has formally requested that the Arab League increase its representation in senior institutional positions, advocating for greater inclusion in executive leadership roles and permanent staffing structures.
The diplomatic appeal was presented by Somalia’s Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Aware, during a high-level working visit in Cairo. Ambassador Aware met with Arab League Secretary General Nabil Fahmi to deliberate on institutional representation, bilateral cooperation, and broader regional developments.
According to an official communique released by the Somali Embassy in Cairo, Ambassador Aware underscored the imperative for Somalia to secure an equitable allocation of professional appointments across all echelons of the regional body. “Ambassador Aware also requested that Somalia be given its share of the staff in the Arab League in the senior ranks such as Heads of Missions and permanent staff,” the embassy stated.
While the announcement did not specify the exact quota of positions sought or disclose current metrics regarding Somali personnel within the secretariat, the initiative reflects Mogadishu’s strategic objective to deepen its institutional engagement across multilateral frameworks.
Having joined the Arab League in 1974, Somalia remains an integral member of the 22-nation organization headquartered in Cairo. Over the past five decades, the nation has consistently contributed to the bloc’s initiatives aimed at fostering political, economic, social, and cultural coordination throughout the Middle East and Africa.
During the consultations, Ambassador Aware conveyed formal greetings from Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to the Arab League leadership. The meeting also served as a crucial platform to analyze geopolitical dynamics impacting the Horn of Africa and the wider Arab region.
Ambassador Aware briefed Secretary General Fahmi on recent domestic developments in Somalia, highlighting critical milestones in national security, state-building initiatives, and institutional governance reforms. Both dignitaries evaluated mechanisms to enhance mutual cooperation, ensuring alignment on shared regional priorities.
“Ambassador Aware also told him that they would work together to strengthen and cooperate with Arab interests,” the embassy noted, reiterating Somalia’s steadfast commitment to the organization’s overarching objectives.
In response to the diplomatic overtures, Secretary General Fahmi expressed appreciation for the constructive dialogue and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to monitoring political and socioeconomic progress within Somalia.
Furthermore, the Secretary General assured the Somali delegation that the Secretariat would give due consideration to the proposals regarding enhanced staffing representation and leadership appointments.
This diplomatic initiative coincides with an active period of international outreach by Somalia as the nation continues to strengthen strategic partnerships regionally and globally. By leveraging bilateral and multilateral platforms, Somalia aims to advance its national interests, bolster security architecture, and expand economic collaboration.
