Türkiye’s parliament has officially approved a two-year extension of its military mission in Somalia. The renewed mandate, which is set to take effect on July 27, authorizes the continued deployment of Turkish Armed Forces to provide vital military training, advisory support, and institutional capacity-building to the Somali security apparatus.
The legislative action follows a formal motion submitted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. In his submission to lawmakers, President Erdoğan underscored that the ongoing military deployment remains critical to strengthening Somalia’s security infrastructure, combating persistent extremist elements, and preserving overarching stability across the volatile Horn of Africa region.
Under the terms of the extended mandate, Turkish forces will maintain their active role in assisting Somali national forces in the ongoing fight against Al-Shabaab, the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group that continues to pose a significant security threat. Furthermore, the framework empowers Turkish personnel to support broader maritime security operations. This includes safeguarding Somalia’s extensive coastline and territorial waters against piracy, illegal fishing, arms smuggling, and other illicit maritime activities that threaten regional commerce and sovereignty.
Türkiye has cultivated a deep and multifaceted partnership with Somalia over the past decade, emerging as one of Mogadishu’s most reliable bilateral security and development allies. A cornerstone of this defense cooperation is the TURKSOM military training base in Mogadishu, which opened in 2017.
Since its inception, the facility has served as a primary hub for training thousands of members of the Somali National Army, significantly bolstering the country’s military readiness and operational capabilities. Beyond training, Ankara has progressively expanded its bilateral cooperation with Somalia into fields encompassing economic development, infrastructure, health, and humanitarian aid.
While the extension ultimately secured broad legislative backing, the parliamentary session was not without debate. Some opposition lawmakers voiced concerns regarding the government’s transparency surrounding the exact scope and long-term objectives of the deployment.
These critics pushed for enhanced parliamentary oversight and more comprehensive reporting regarding Türkiye’s expanding military and strategic footprint in the region.
The renewal of the mandate arrives at a critical juncture for the Federal Government of Somalia. Somali security forces are currently engaged in heightened military campaigns aimed at dislodging Al-Shabaab from remaining strongholds, even as the nation works to solidify institutional control, secure its offshore resources, and prepare for a phased transition of security responsibilities from international peacekeepers.
For Ankara, the extension signals that its strategic commitment to Mogadishu remains unwavering. By maintaining its physical and advisory presence on the ground, Türkiye aims to anchor its position as a premier security architect in the Horn of Africa, ensuring that Somali forces gradually acquire the self-sufficiency needed to guarantee lasting peace and regional stability.
