EU invests €411 million in 73 projects to expand access to advanced technology and innovation

By HER staff reporter

The European Union has announced a €411 million investment to support 73 new research and innovation projects aimed at improving access to advanced technologies, strengthening scientific collaboration and boosting Europe’s technological competitiveness.

The funding, provided through Horizon Europe, the EU’s research and innovation programme, is intended to help researchers, universities, research institutions and businesses access specialized facilities, advanced digital tools and scientific services.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA), which seeks to create a more integrated environment for research and innovation across European Union member states and associated countries.

The 73 projects are expected to improve the availability of high-performance research infrastructure, encourage cooperation between scientific institutions and accelerate the development of technologies that address economic, environmental and social challenges.

A major objective of the investment is to reduce barriers that prevent smaller research institutions and businesses from accessing sophisticated scientific equipment and services. By improving access to shared resources, the EU aims to ensure that research opportunities are not concentrated solely in a limited number of well-funded institutions.

The programme is also expected to support the development of digital platforms and collaborative networks that enable researchers to exchange data, share expertise and conduct joint scientific investigations across national borders.

Priority areas include modernizing research facilities, improving access to high-performance computing, strengthening open-science infrastructure and supporting technological development in areas such as artificial intelligence, clean energy, advanced materials and environmental monitoring.

These fields are increasingly important as European countries seek to strengthen their industrial competitiveness, advance the green transition and respond to emerging technological and environmental challenges.

Small and medium-sized enterprises could also benefit from improved access to research infrastructure and specialized technical services. Such support may help businesses develop new products, improve production processes and translate scientific discoveries into commercial applications.

The investment is expected to encourage greater participation in international research partnerships, particularly among institutions and researchers that face financial or technical limitations. Sharing facilities and expertise could also reduce duplication of research efforts and improve the efficiency of public investment in science.

The initiative reflects the EU’s broader ambition to make scientific knowledge and technological innovation more accessible while strengthening cooperation between academic institutions, industry and public authorities.

Through Horizon Europe, the bloc seeks to turn research findings into practical solutions that support economic growth, public welfare and environmental sustainability.

The projects are expected to work with academic and industrial partners to develop research services, improve technical capabilities and strengthen the long-term sustainability of scientific infrastructure.

The €411 million allocation underscores the EU’s continuing emphasis on research and innovation as drivers of economic resilience and international competitiveness.

As implementation progresses, the projects will be expected to demonstrate how improved access to technology and scientific resources can accelerate discoveries, encourage cross-border collaboration and help address shared challenges across Europe.
