AfCFTA partners with All-Africa IP

By HER staff reporter

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has announced a strategic partnership with the All-Africa Intellectual Property Summit. This collaboration aims to bolster the role of intellectual property (IP) in accelerating intra-African trade, industrialization, and innovation.

The partnership is designed to support the upcoming seventh annual All-Africa Intellectual Property Summit, which is scheduled to take place from November 11 to 13 in Nairobi, Kenya. Centered around the theme, “Mainstreaming Intellectual Property for Africa’s Trade, Industrial & Creative Economy Transformation,” the three-day event will bring together a diverse coalition of policymakers, institutional leaders, business executives, creators, academics, and financial investors.

This collaborative effort arrives at a crucial juncture for the continent’s legal and economic integration. Earlier in February 2026, during the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, member states achieved a monumental milestone by approving eight of the nine Annexes under the AfCFTA Protocol on Intellectual Property Rights. These newly endorsed frameworks comprehensively cover critical areas such as patents, trademarks, industrial designs, utility models, geographical indications, copyright and related rights, plant variety protection, and traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, and genetic resources.

Speaking on the partnership, Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, emphasized that the primary focus has shifted from policy design to practical execution. He noted that the ultimate objective is to translate these robust legal frameworks into tangible commercial opportunities for African enterprises, innovators, and creators, effectively bridging the gap between intellectual assets and industrial growth.

Similarly, Sand Kalu, Chairman of the All-Africa Intellectual Property Summit, highlighted that the event will serve as a vital melting pot for policy and commerce. The summit will evaluate how businesses can leverage IP to enhance competitiveness, attract vital investments, and smoothly expand into new regional and international markets.

Key agenda items for the November summit will include navigating the implementation of the AfCFTA intellectual property protocols, boosting technology transfer, commercializing creative industries, and addressing cross-border compliance. Additionally, the event will feature an interactive innovation pavilion designed to showcase homegrown African intellectual assets, technologies, and creative works directly to potential investors and commercial partners.
