Türkiye’s Presidential Center for Combating Disinformation has issued a strong and definitive denial regarding viral social media reports that falsely claimed Somalia had implemented new visa restrictions on Turkish citizens.
In an official statement released to the public, the center clarified that travel arrangements and visa policies between Türkiye and Somalia remain entirely unchanged. It emphasized that citizens of both partner nations continue to navigate travel under the exact same existing rules and reciprocal frameworks that have been in place.
“There are no new restrictions or legal changes to the visa arrangements between the two countries,” the statement explicitly noted. Characterizing the rumors as entirely fabricated, the disinformation unit warned that the false reports were intentionally designed to generate friction and damage the deep-rooted relations and robust cooperation shared between Ankara and Mogadishu. Officials urged the public and media outlets alike to disregard unverified online claims and to rely strictly on official state institutions for accurate updates regarding international travel regulations.
The attempt to sow discord comes against the backdrop of exceptionally close and expanding ties between Türkiye and Somalia. Türkiye has cemented its status as one of Somalia’s most reliable and trusted international partners. This special relationship traces its roots back to a landmark visit by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan—then serving as Türkiye’s prime minister—to Mogadishu at the height of the devastating 2011 famine.
Since that historic turning point, Ankara has dramatically scaled up its footprint in the Horn of Africa nation. Türkiye has provided vital humanitarian aid and sustained development assistance, injecting crucial investments into local health, education, and foundational infrastructure projects. Furthermore, Turkish commercial enterprises play an integral role in managing key pieces of Somali infrastructure, including the ongoing operations at Mogadishu’s international airport and its primary seaport.
Bilateral cooperation has steadily broadened from humanitarian and economic domains into the security sector. Capitalizing on years of continuous Turkish training, logistical support, and capacity-building programs for Somali security forces, the two governments formalized their defense alignment by signing a comprehensive defense and economic cooperation framework agreement.
Beyond internal state-building, Türkiye has also taken on a pivotal diplomatic role in fostering regional stability within the Horn of Africa. Notably, Ankara successfully facilitated crucial diplomatic talks between Somalia and Ethiopia. These high-level negotiations culminated in the signing of the Ankara Declaration, wherein both neighboring countries formally reaffirmed their mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty, national unity, and territorial integrity.
