President Ruto pledges KSh300 million SGR station for Nyamira

By HER staff reporter

President William Ruto has officially allocated 300 million Kenyan Shillings for the construction of a Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station in Ikonge, Nyamira County. Announced during his development tour of the South Nyanza region on Monday, this move aims to rectify what local leaders had previously described as a “glaring omission” in the railway expansion project.

The controversy began when the planned SGR extension from Naivasha to Kisumu included major stations in Narok, Bomet, Kericho, and Kisumu, but failed to mention Nyamira. Although the tracks were set to pass through the county, the absence of a designated stop led residents and traders to fear that Nyamira would simply be a land that development flies over without providing local benefits.

During his speech to the crowd gathered in Ikonge, President Ruto sought to eliminate these concerns. He asserted that he was the one who pushed for the railway line to pass through Ikonge because he recognizes the region’s vast potential. He promised that the KSh300 million station would ensure Nyamira becomes a destination for investment and growth rather than just a transit point.

This planned station is designed for both passenger and cargo services, providing a vital link for Nyamira’s agricultural heartland—which produces tea, bananas, and other horticultural goods—directly to markets in Nairobi and the port of Mombasa.

The President further urged local farmers and traders to organize themselves into cooperatives to effectively utilize the railway services. He noted that the station would help transport goods efficiently, reducing costs and shortening the time it takes for produce to reach the market. This SGR pledge is a cornerstone of the government’s broader “Bottom-Up” economic agenda for the county.

During his visit, the President also outlined additional plans, including upgrading rural feeder roads to connect farms to the new Ikonge station, expanding services at the Nyamira County Referral Hospital, and building modern markets to provide better working conditions for small-scale traders and “mama mbogas.”

From a political perspective, analysts view this decision as a strategic move by the President to strengthen support in a region that has seen past political friction. By addressing the omission, he has effectively silenced local leaders who criticized the government for neglecting the area. While the President dismissed his critics as “naysayers,” local officials expressed significant relief at the announcement.
