AU Commission Chairperson calls for urgent dialogue after rising tensions in South West Somalia

By staff reporter

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, is closely monitoring the evolving situation in the South West State of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Expressing deep concern over the escalating political and security tensions, the Chairperson has called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any actions that could lead to further escalation.

This intervention comes as the AU warns that the current friction poses a significant threat to Somalia’s stability, national security, unity, and the already fragile humanitarian situation in the region.

The Chairperson underscored the National Consultative Council (NCC) as the vital and legitimate framework for inclusive dialogue and consensus-building. He encouraged all Somali stakeholders to make constructive use of this platform to resolve their differences peacefully and through institutional channels.

Highlighting the fundamental need for cooperation, the Chairperson emphasized that any disputes between the Federal Government and the Federal Member States must be addressed through direct dialogue, prioritizing national unity above all else.

The African Union reaffirmed its unwavering support for Somalia’s ongoing peace, stability, and state-building efforts. The Chairperson reiterated that the Union stands ready to facilitate and support reconciliation initiatives to ensure a peaceful resolution to the impasse. By urging a return to the negotiating table, the AU aims to safeguard the progress made in Somalia’s democratic journey and prevent a relapse into widespread conflict.
