Fans frustrated as harambee stars rescue point against Eritrea after late Ogam strike

By HER staff reporter

The Harambee Stars were forced to fight back from a goal down to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Eritrea in their opening Group D match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at the Nyayo National Stadium. Forward Ryan Ogam emerged as the hero for Kenya, netting a crucial equalizer five minutes from full-time to spare the home side’s blushes after a tense and largely frustrating encounter.

Kenya began the match with visible urgency, dominating early possession and searching for an immediate breakthrough. Job Ochieng proved to be a constant outlet down the left flank, orchestrating several attacking sequences alongside Timothy Ouma. Ryan Ogam had the hosts’ clearest opportunity of the first half in the 11th minute when he was played clean through on goal; he executed a clever feint to deceive a defender, but his low shot was parried away by 19-year-old Eritrean goalkeeper Yonathan Sultan. Despite controlling large portions of the early exchanges, Kenya struggled with a lack of clinical precision in the final third, allowing the disciplined Eritrean backline to repeatedly clear their lines.

Eritrea grew increasingly confident as the half progressed, relying on compact defending and sharp counter-attacks. The visitors stunned the home crowd in the 37th minute following a costly defensive error. A mistake by Manzur Okwaro while trying to play out from the back allowed Eritrea’s Nahom Netabay to pounce on the loose ball. Netabay advanced and struck a clinical low effort past Kenyan goalkeeper Bryne Omondi, sending the visitors into a 1-0 lead. The goal sent shockwaves through the stadium, and the Harambee Stars headed into the half-time break to a chorus of boos from frustrated home supporters.

Headlock-style defensive resilience from Eritrea continued well into the second half, with Sultan producing stellar saves to deny substitute Mohammed Bajaber and midfielder Timothy Ouma from dangerous free-kicks. Head coach Benni McCarthy turned to his bench, introducing fresh legs including Ben Stanley and Shariff Musa, which injected much-needed width and tempo into Kenya’s attacking structure.

The mounting pressure finally culminated in the 85th minute. Ben Stanley drove down the flank and delivered a precise, low cross into the danger zone. Ogam reacted quickest amidst a cluster of defenders, turning the ball home from close range to level the score at 1-1 and trigger wild celebrations across the stands.

Though Kenya pushed heavily for a late winner during four minutes of stoppage time—with Musa and Bajaber both coming close—Eritrea held firm to secure a memorable away point. Post-match analysis heavily focused on Kenya’s offensive struggles and the disruptive off-field build-up heading into the fixture, leaving the Harambee Stars with plenty of tactical adjustments to ponder ahead of their upcoming away match against Guinea.
